Spotlight on Oak Grove Lutheran School: Forming Faithful Leaders for Generations
This month, we are thrilled to shine our ELEA School Spotlight on Oak Grove Lutheran School, a vibrant and mission-driven community serving students from age three through grade twelve in Fargo, North Dakota. With more than a century of history, dating back to its founding as the Oak Grove Lutheran Ladies Seminary in 1906, Oak Grove continues to grow as a place where faith, learning, and service thrive.
Oak Grove’s mission is clear and deeply rooted:
“Our mission is to express God’s love by nurturing students for academic achievement, lifelong Christian commitment, and loving service throughout the world. Our vision is to inspire students to impact God’s world.”
What makes Oak Grove stand out are the core values woven into its culture: Courage & Curiosity, Faith & Reason, Character, Relationships, Service & Leadership, and Community. These values shape not only instruction, but how students and staff walk alongside one another in faith and learning.
Celebrating a Year of Growth
Over the past year, Oak Grove has embarked on a transformative chapter through its Acorns to Oaks building and renovation initiative. This multi-campus project aims to expand STEM opportunities, enhance community spaces, and upgrade key facilities.
Katlyn Haugrud, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, shared how meaningful it has been to see progress unfold:
“The master plan for our North Campus includes a new facility for STEM, a common area, and a cafeteria, as well as renovations to one of the existing buildings. It was wonderful to see renovations to the existing buildings completed this fall!”
Despite construction delays early in the school year, Oak Grove’s community demonstrated resilience, flexibility, and a commitment to student success, embodying the very values Oak Grove strives to instill.
A Strong Partnership with ELEA
Oak Grove has long benefited from being part of the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association community. As Katlyn describes,
“ELEA shares our faith, values, and dedication to excellence in education with a Christian foundation… ELEA has been a valuable partner in helping Oak Grove Lutheran thrive as a place where students grow academically, spiritually, and socially.”
This alignment in mission has allowed Oak Grove to tap into resources, professional development, and networks that strengthen both day-to-day operations and long-term strategy.
When Community Steps In
Like many schools in seasons of growth and transition, Oak Grove has navigated its share of challenges. Last summer’s renovations to Benson Hall, the core academic building for many high school classes, ran past the hoped-for finish date. With the school year approaching, Oak Grove needed a temporary solution.
That’s when the ELCA community stepped up in a remarkable way.
“Our friends at First Lutheran Church, located nearby Oak Grove, allowed us to use their space for six weeks until Benson was ready for classes.”
This spirit of partnership extended beyond facilities. With Oak Grove operating without a campus pastor for half of the year, local ELCA churches and pastors stepped in to help sustain the school’s cherished daily chapel tradition.
“Without this support from the ELCA community, our transition would not have gone as smoothly.”
These stories reflect not only Oak Grove’s resilience but also the strength of shared ministry within the ELCA network, a network the ELEA helps nurture and connect.
Looking Ahead: Building for the Future
As construction continues and new spaces come to life, Oak Grove is focused on deepening its offerings, both academically and spiritually.
The school aims to expand dual-credit and advanced academic opportunities, strengthen partnerships with ELCA institutions like Concordia College, and continue welcoming students from diverse faith backgrounds into an environment rooted in inquiry and Christian tradition.
“Oak Grove is committed to utilizing these new spaces for STEM, faith development, fine arts, and athletic opportunities… We are committed to continuing a firm foundation and future in Christ-centered education for generations to come.”
How ELEA Will Walk Alongside Them
Looking to the year ahead, Oak Grove anticipates ongoing support from the ELEA as it grows into its next chapter.
“We anticipate leveraging the ELEA’s professional development opportunities… and look forward to continued networking and collaboration with other Lutheran schools.”
That collaboration, built on shared faith, shared mission, and shared vision, remains central to Oak Grove’s continued success.
