Spotlight on Luther Memorial Academy: Celebrating 50 Years of Faith, Community, and Student Growth
Found in the heart of downtown Erie, Luther Memorial Academy (LMA) has been serving students and families since 1976. Over the years, the school has built a strong legacy, with more than 700 alumni who have gone on to become leaders, caregivers, teachers, and positive contributors in their communities!
At the center of everything LMA does is its mission:
“Our mission to have our children grow: In wisdom (academically), in stature (physically), in favor with God (spiritually), in favor with others (socially) to ensure they become a positive asset to our community and to themselves.”
That mission continues to shape the school’s approach to educating and caring for the whole child.
A Diverse and Welcoming Community
LMA is especially proud of the diverse community that fills its classrooms each day. More than half of the student population identifies as minorities, and over 90% of students live within Erie city limits. The school also works to make Christian education accessible to families, with more than half of students eligible for EITC scholarship funding.
The result is a school community where students from many different backgrounds are able to learn, grow, and support one another together.
Celebrating 50 Years of Ministry
This year marked a major milestone for Luther Memorial Academy as the school celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
The school also shared that they are “very proud to be the only K–8 ELCA school in the state of Pennsylvania,” continuing a unique ministry that has impacted generations of students and families.
Supported Through ELEA
LMA shared that ELEA resources have played an important role in school life over the years.
“Luther Memorial Academy has relied on ELCA resources for our weekly all-school Chapel time and ELEA curriculum has been a vital part of our annual Lutheran Schools Week celebrations.”
The school was also honored to receive the ELEA Endowment Grant on two separate occasions. Those grants helped support PBIS incentives for students and made it possible to give every one of their 106 students a new grade-level picture book or chapter book for Christmas.
Looking Toward the Future
As the school plans for the future, leadership and the school board are continuing to focus on strengthening student success through academic growth, attendance, engagement, and personal development.
One major goal for the upcoming year is hiring a part-time school counselor to support students socially and emotionally through individual and small-group care.
LMA shared that they hope this role will “benefit not just those individuals who need some extra support, but also our community as a whole.”
The school also hopes to intentionally connect faith with emotional wellness and counseling support.
“We hope not to replace sound counseling practices, but to deepen them with faith-based meaning and hope.”
They added that resources from ELEA that connect emotional well-being with “a student’s identity in Christ” would be especially meaningful moving forward.
Staying Connected
LMA continues to stay actively connected to the larger Lutheran education community. In fall 2024, Rev. Jay Mitchell was honored with the ELEA Pastor of the Year award. Principal Michelle Thom and Pastor Jay also attended the National ELEA Conference in Cleveland.
Through faith, community, and a deep commitment to students, Luther Memorial Academy continues to make a lasting impact in Erie and beyond.
